Richard J. Yurko

Richard J. Yurko is the founder and former Managing Shareholder of Yurko, Salvesen & Remz, P.C, a business litigation boutique based in Boston. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, and he received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he served as the Senior Projects Editor for the Harvard Civil Rights – Civil Liberties Law Review.  Rich also co-owns a large B&B in Lyme, NH.

Joyce Kauffman

Joyce Kauffman is a lawyer with Kauffman Law & Mediation in Cambridge, MA. She is a 1992 graduate of Northeastern University School of Law and previously worked as a psychotherapist and director of an after-school arts program. She was Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s “Lawyer of the Year” in 2009, and is a member of Boston Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association, and the National LGBT Bar Association. She is also a member of the National Center for Lesbian Rights’ National Family Law Advisory Council, member of the Family Equality Emeritus Board, and a volunteer with Senior Partners for Justice. Her articles on the importance of securing legal protections for LGBT families have appeared in the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and Bay Windows.

David Hayter

David has held high-level executive and finance positions at Liberty Mutual, Hospitals of Ontario Pension Plan and Manulife/John Hancock. While at Liberty Mutual, he was the founding co-executive sponsor of the company’s first LGBT Employee Resource Group. Holding an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada, David brings to GLAD a wealth of knowledge and experience in investments, accounting and finance and has served on the boards of Wave Accounting, Community Servings, St. John’s Hospital Foundation, and the Wilfrid Laurier University Board of Governors. David brings a personal passion for GLAD’s mission and a commitment to furthering education around LGBT issues.

Darian M. Butcher

Darian Butcher is an Associate at Day Pitney LLP. She earned her J.D. from Boston University School of Law, and clerked for Massachusetts Appeals Court Justice R. Malcolm Graham (ret.). Darian also serves as a Big Sister through the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston.

Leila Bailey-Stewart

Currently Vice President of Recruitment and Admissions at City Year, Leila Bailey-Stewart brings years of experience advocating for equal access to education for the region’s youth. Through her previous roles at City Year, including Program Manager, Content Director of Summer Academy and Managing Director of National Recruitment, she has helped create equal and inclusive environments of learning for students from diverse racial and socio-economic backgrounds. A resident of Braintree, Leila is enthusiastic to leverage her expertise to reach more LGBTQ youth and young adults through community partnerships with GLAD.

Suzanne Baumann

Suzanne is a counselor, educator, and consultant to youth, families, and schools, with a specialization in LGBTQA+ young people and families. Her work in schools employs a diversity and inclusion approach to creating and implementing robust wellness programs. Suzanne has spoken at over fifty schools and numerous education conferences, including the National Conference on Girls Education and the Independent School Gender Project. In addition to maintaining a private practice in Cambridge, she is a wellness consultant to Boston University Academy. She is a past teaching fellow at Harvard Graduate School of Education, a graduate of Wellesley College, and received two Masters degrees from Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Mark Brown

Following a career in teaching, facilitation, and pastoral work, Mark Stephen Brown is currently a training and development specialist at John Hancock/Manulife. He was the coordinator of liturgy at the Jesuit Urban Center for 5 years, where he also tutored first-grade students, coordinated visits to the sick and elderly, and served monthly meals to people living with HIV/AIDS. He is the co-leader of Manulife’s Boston chapter of Professionals Reaching Out for Unity and Diversity. Brown has a B.A. from Assumption College and a Master of Theology from Weston Jesuit School of Theology (now Boston College School of Theology and Ministry). Originally from Rhode Island, he resides with his spouse in Dorchester.

Edward Byrne

Edward F. Byrne is the Student Diversity Programs Coordinator in the Cambridge Public Schools, serving as an advisor to school and city leaders on equity and inclusion issues. He has held positions as Aide to the Mayor of Cambridge, MA for education and equity initiatives, Project Manager, Sametz Blackstone Associates and Managing Director, Project 10 East. Edward served two terms as vice-chair of the MA Commission on GLBT Youth, and serves on the New Leaders Council Boston Board of Directors and previously, the Board of Visitors at Fenway Health. He holds a Master of Public Policy from Simmons College.

Francisco Cabas

In his current role as Virology Solutions Specialist at Alere, the number one global provider of point of care infectious disease testing, Francisco oversees the company’s HIV portfolio in the Northeast. He works with state health departments and community-based organizations to equip their prevention teams with some of the most sensitive HIV assays available in the market. After completing a B.A. in Ethnic Studies and an M.A. in International Relations at Brown University, Francisco joined the Sexual Health and Education program at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. During his tenure at the Center, Francisco was twice elected co-chair of the California Planning Group on HIV and AIDS, and worked with state officials and local stakeholders to communicate the implementation of the National HIV and AIDS Strategy in California.

Andre L. Campagna

Andre Campagna is Senior Consultant at Beacon Hill Staffing Group, which conducts professional searches on behalf of law firms, corporations and non-profit organizations. A longtime GLAD supporter, Andre joined GLAD’s Spirit of Justice Committee in 2007 and co-chaired that event in 2008, 2009 and 2013, which resulted in GLAD meeting significant fundraising goals. Andre was also a member of GLAD’s pilot Board of Ambassadors program.

Martha Holt Castle

Martha currently serves as Counsel at Raytheon in Waltham, where she provides legal support to the environmental health and safety program, as well as assistance in real estate transactions and risk management. Previously, she was Assistant District Attorney of Middlesex County and later an Associate at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, LLP in Providence. Martha was Chair of the LGBTQ Committee of the Rhode Island Bar Association in 2007, and a member of the Rhode Island Lawyers for Equality and Diversity advocating for LGBTQ equality. She later went on to serve as Chair and Board Member of Marriage Equality Rhode Island (MERI), and through her leadership, the grass roots organization was instrumental in the passage of statewide marriage equality in 2013.

Fred Csibi-Levin

Fred Csibi-Levin is Lab Head and investigator at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research in Cambridge. He has held a position on GLAD’s Spirit of Justice Award Dinner committee since 2015, serving as co-chair for 2016 and 2017. Fred is passionate about bringing his perspective both as a member of the science sector and as a Latino immigrant to GLAD. Originally from Venezuela, he completed his studies in France, receiving degrees in biological sciences from the University of Grenoble, and a Ph.D. in cell biology from the University of Montpellier 2. From France, Fred moved to Boston to fulfill a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, which marked the start of his career researching innovative cancer treatments.

Darla Pires DeGrace

Most recently joining Reebok as a Senior Recruiter in June 2018, Darla has spent her 17-year career immersed in the education sector helping organizations attract and retain diverse talent. In response to identifying diversity recruitment and retention inadequacies in education, she recently launched DeGrace Group, a diversity and inclusion consulting firm. Prior to launching DeGrace Group, Darla served as Director of National Diversity Recruitment and Strategic Partnerships at City Year National Educational Non-Profit. Also the immediate past president and CEO of the National Black MBA Association-Boston Chapter, Darla was recently appointed Commissioner on Governor Charlie Baker’s Black Advisory Commission. As a first generation college student, Darla grew up in Cambridge and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Emmanuel College and later earned a Master of Science in Communications Management from Simmons College.

Liz Doherty

Liz Doherty is currently Senior Director & Associate General Counsel at Akamai Technologies, Inc. in Cambridge, the global leader in content delivery network (CDN) services. Liz was a founding leader of Akamai’s first employee resource group for LGBTQ employees and allies, out@akamai, and currently sits on the company’s global Diversity & Inclusion Executive Steering Committee. In addition to serving as co-chair of GLAD’s Spirit of Justice Dinner in 2017 and 2018, Liz has served as a Co-Vice Chair of the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth. Liz is a graduate of Tufts University, received her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in San Francisco, and began her legal career at Bingham McCutchen LLP (now Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP).

Shane Dunn

Shane Dunn is Director of Advancement Strategy and Regional Development for Uncommon Schools, a nonprofit organization that operates 52 high-performing public charter schools in Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. Prior to this leadership role at Uncommon, Shane worked on a campaign to advocate for more public charter schools in Massachusetts and also worked as the head of development and external affairs at Excel Academy Charter Schools in East Boston. Earlier in his career, he worked in a variety of alumni affairs and development roles at Harvard University, Tufts University, and the MIT Sloan School of Management. Shane is an active volunteer alumni leader for his undergraduate alma mater, Cornell University. He also serves on the SPARK Boston Council, the City of Boston’s millennials advisory cabinet. Shane first got involved in GLAD as a volunteer for the Spirit of Justice dinner committee. The son of a lesbian mother, Shane is originally from Waterville, New York. He lives in Boston with his wife Elizabeth and young son Liam. He is a graduate of Cornell University and earned a master’s degree in higher education administration from Boston College.

Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin is the Professional Development Manager at Nutter, McClennen & Fish LLP. Ben joined Nutter from Boston University School of Law, where he was a Visiting Attorney Adviser within the Office of Career Development and Pro Bono. Prior to working at BU, Ben was an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk and Middlesex counties. He prosecuted a wide variety of cases in the Framingham District Court, Boston Municipal Court, Suffolk Superior Court, and several Juvenile Courts. Ben lives with his husband and young daughter on the North Shore, where he is also the chairman of the local Historic District Commission. Ben served on GLAD’s Spirit of Justice Award Dinner Committee for four years, and co-chaired the 2014 and 2015 events. He is a graduate of the University of Mary Washington and Boston University School of Law.

Joseph Garland

Joseph Metmowlee Garland is the Medical Director of the Infectious Diseases and Immunology Center at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. His focus is on clinical HIV care for low-income individuals. He is a Board Certified physician in Infections Diseases and Internal Medicine, and a Practicing HIV Specialist of the American Academy of HIV Medicine. Prior positions include serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Infectious Diseases Division at the University of Pennsylvania, and as a staff physician at a federally qualified health center, Philadelphia FIGHT.  He holds a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard Medical School.

George Hastie

George Hastie, MPH has been a passionate HIV and GLBTQ community organizer, advocate and educator for over 25 years, cultivating extensive networks in these communities and in the nonprofit sector. George manages a project with Community Research Initiative’s HIV Drug Assistance Program, providing training to health care and social service providers across Massachusetts to ensure that more people living with HIV have comprehensive health insurance coverage and access to medications. As Principal of Hastie Consulting he provides capacity building training, including GLBTQ cultural competency, to nonprofits. George holds a Master of Public Health from Boston University, a BA from Harvard College, and co-chairs the GLAD-led coalition working to pass legislation in Massachusetts requiring insurance coverage to treat HIV-associated lipodystrophy.

Deborah Heller

Deborah Heller is co-founder of consulting firm HellerCunningham, with 35+ years of strategic organizational consulting for clients such as the American Psychiatric Association, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, L.L. Bean, State Street, Boston Architectural College and the American Red Cross. As Chair of Fenway Health’s Board of Directors, she founded the Fenway Women’s Dance, and has served on the boards of organizations ranging from The New Fund, Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass to the WGBH Advisory Board. Currently she is also a member of The Leadership Circle at Fenway Health. Deborah holds Master and Doctorate degrees in Social Systems from Boston College.  She has had a lifelong commitment to social justice, human rights and community service.

Chuck Latovich

Chuck Latovich has managed and implemented diversity communication strategies, designed and conducted corporate training in diversity issues, and consulted on diversity strategies and goals. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in education from Boston University.

Dianne R. Phillips

Dianne R. Phillips is partner in the Boston office of Holland + Knight, where she practices regulatory, energy, and environmental law. She co-chairs the firm’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Workgroup, whose mission is to develop and promote GLBT lawyers. The group has participated in GLBT-focused activities such as pro bono representation of HIV positive asylum seekers and led the firm to sponsor the annual Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network “Respect Awards.”

Marlene Seltzer

Marlene B. Seltzer recently retired after 10 years as President and CEO of Jobs for the Future (JFF), a national nonprofit that is focused on improving education and economic mobility for low income communities and individuals. She consults and speaks on systemic education reform and and innovative workforce development practices and policies aimed at improving education systems and labor market outcomes.  Prior to JFF, Marlene held a number of prominent positions in nonprofit management, government and workforce development.  She has served on numerous national and nonprofit boards boards over her career and currently serves on several boards aimed at improving economic and social mobility.  Marlene holds an M.A. in labor economics from Northeastern University.

Lee Swislow

Since Lee left her role as executive director of GLAD in 2014, she has been working as an interim CEO for non-profits in transition, where she draws on her expertise in strategic planning, financial management, organizational development and program development. Previously she served for five years as Vice President at JRI Health, providing a variety of services to people living with HIV/AIDS as well as LGBTQ youth. Lee is thrilled to return to GLAD, where she led the organization as Executive Director for nine years. She is proud of the progress GLAD has made in securing rights for the LGBTQ community and people living with HIV/AIDS, and knows how much work is yet to be done.

David Wilson

David Wilson was a plaintiff in GLAD’s 2003 Goodridge groundbreaking victory, making Massachusetts the first state to legally marry same-sex couples. The case and the quest for equal rights under the law ignited his desire to become more involved in the civil rights struggle for LGBT folks, especially those raised in the black community. David was a founding member of Fenway Community Health Center’s Endowment Board, raising $1 million in this first three years. Before retiring, David was Vice President of real estate company Spaulding & Slye Colliers and worked for 30 years at Verizon. As a former member of the Board of MassEquality, the Board and Business Council of the Human Rights Campaign and the Massachusetts LGBT Youth Commission, David has worked to eradicate institutional racism, introduce diversity and inclusion training programs coupled with targeted outreach to LGBT people of color.
